Our therapy is geared towards making connections and developing functional and meaningful communication to support social and learning interactions. Our therapists are Hanen certified and DIR certified.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a person across their lifespan. People with Autism perceive the world differently and therefore learn differently. Children with autism have difficulties relating to and communicating with other people. They will also show restricted or repetitive behaviours and interests. However, just as no two people are alike, no two people with Autism are alike. They come with their unique set of skills, interests and challenges.
At Hills District Speech Therapy we know that developing a strong connection with each child and family is the one thing that will created the greatest gains. We focus on the principles of Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-Based Model (DIR) and Hanen; following your child’s lead and interests, identifying motivators and adding to the interaction.
Through the development of these strong relationships and trust, we foster functional and meaningful communication. Further therapy can then go on to include a range of other approaches such as the use of social stories, visuals and group social skills training.
