Activities of Daily Living refers to the array of basic tasks that an individual must accomplish on a daily basis.

When looking at the Activities and participation arm of the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) model, Occupational Therapists play an integral role in assessing and supporting their clients to participate in two core areas – mobility and self care. These areas are otherwise broadly referred to as ‘Activities of Daily Living’ which is one of the eight domains from the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework our OT services at HDST.

Showering & Bathing

What can seem like a routine, simple task for children and adults is actually a complex and synchronous balance of adequate (and extensive) fine motor and gross motor skills, sensory processing, and visual perceptual skills. Our occupational therapist analyses your child’s performance in these tasks, and takes into consideration their ability to obtain and use showering supplies, apply soap, rinse and dry body parts, maintain bathing positions, and transfer to and from bathing positions (AOTA, 2014). Typically developing children are able to master showering independently from around 6 – 7 years of age (Kidsense, 2021).
